FFI(Fly Fishing International)에서 주체하는 캐스팅 강사 자격증(CI, Casting Instructor)의 시험 내용은 실제로 사용되는 캐스팅 기술들과 유용한 캐스팅 개념들을 체계적으로 학습할 수 있는 기회가 된다. 누군가에게 무언가를 가르친다는 것은 그것을 정확하게 이해하는 과정이기에 CI 시험을 준비하는 과정은 플라이낚시 캐스팅을 이해하고 습득하는 좋은 방법이라고 생각한다. 언제가 될지 모르지만 나 역시 CI 시험을 목표로 열심히 공부하고 있다. 오늘은 그 구체적인 시험 내용을 공유하고 관련된 이야기들을 공유해 볼까 한다. 나 역시 공부하는 과정에 있기 때문에 정확하지 않은 설명이 있을 수 있음을 미리 알려둔다.

2026년에는 미국에서 3번의 시험(9/9~12 Denver, Colorado | 9.22~24 Redding, California | 11.4~5 Crystal River, Florida)이 있었고 일본에서 1번의 시험(10/30~31 Sendai, Miyagi Okura Furusato Center) 그리고 프랑스에서 1번의 시험(7월쯤에 있었던 것으로 기억한다)이 있었던 것으로 알고 있다. 현시점 기준 2027년 영국(4/21~23 Fordingbridge, Hampshire)에서의 시험 일정이 확정된 것으로 알고 있고 말레이시아의 등록은 이미 완료되었고 일정은 미정인 것으로 알고 있다. 해당 시험을 등록하기 위해서는 FFI의 회원 자격을 유지해야 한다.

해당 시험은 이틀 동안 워크숍과 36문제 정도의 필기시험(선택형, 30문제 이상 맞아야 합격)과 22문제(15개의 캐스팅 시범, 7개의 지도)의 실기시험으로 이루어진다. 아래는 2025년 2월 20일 버전의 실제 영문 실기시험 평가서이고 한글 번역 내용을 추가했다.

Exam Structure and Administration:

The exam is in two parts: Casting Demonstrations and Teaching. To pass the exam, a candidate must attempt all tasks, pass all of the Teaching tasks and have a combination of scores on the Casting Demonstration tasks that total no more than two Fails. The overall time for exam administration is expected to be between 2 and 2.5 hours. Casting Demonstration tasks can be expected to take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes (about 5 minutes per task) and the Teaching tasks can be expected to take approximately 45 minutes (about 7 minutes per task). Candidates are advised to plan their lessons to take about 5 minutes to allow time for involvement with examiners where required. If at any point the candidate’s performance precludes passing the exam, then examiners may end the exam and offer the remainder of the allotted time to the benefit of the candidate.

Scoring:

Casting Demonstration tasks will be scored Pass, Fail, or Borderline. A task may be scored Borderline when performance is neither a clear Pass nor a clear Fail. Two Borderline scores taken together equal a Fail. Teaching tasks will be scored as a Pass or Fail.

Equipment Requirements:

The maximum allowed rod length is 9ft (2.74m), and it must be rated by the manufacturer for at most a 7 weight line.

The fly line must be a floating line of one-piece construction and rated by the manufacturer as no more than a 7 weight line. Candidates are encouraged to use a high visibility line.

The leader must be at least 7.5ft (2.3m) long.

The fly must be yarn.

Absent equipment malfunctions, candidates must complete Part One: Casting Demonstrations (Tasks 1-15) using a single outfit.

General Information:

Before the examination, the candidate must inform the lead examiner of his or her dominant hand. The candidate must perform all tasks on the dominant side (on-side, as defined below) using the dominant hand unless otherwise specified by a task.

Casting direction will be at the discretion of the candidate. If conditions change, the candidate may elect to change the casting direction.

Course layout: The accuracy targets will be placed on the measuring tape prior to the exam.

Cast distance will be measured from the caster’s forward foot to the fly.

Marking the fly line is prohibited.

A false cast is a forward cast followed by a back cast, both of which remain aerialized.

An off-side cast is defined as:

For right hand dominant casters, viewed from behind the caster on the caster- target line, casting with the rod tip to the observer’s left of the caster’s head.

For left hand dominant casters, a similar off-side definition applies, with right and left replacing each other.

Bending at the waist to accomplish off-side casts is allowed.

Off-side casts may not be performed by using the non-dominant hand.

Stance and style of off-side casts are at the caster’s discretion.

An on-side cast is a cast which is not off-side.

Neither hauling nor shooting line is permitted, unless otherwise specified in the task.

When hauling is not permitted, the fly line will be held in the rod hand only, unless otherwise specified in the task.

Various casting styles are permitted provided the cast meets the performance standards of the examination.

In Part Two, an examiner will be available to serve as a student. The candidate may use teaching aids only in Part Two.

The candidate may not use or refer to notes of any kind during the examination.

Roll cast tasks must be performed on water if it is available. If roll casts tasks are done on water, then with the candidate’s consent, the order of the exam tasks may be changed to finish Part One with Tasks 9-11 and start Part Two with Task 18. If roll casts tasks are not performed on water, then the candidate may choose to use a roll cast tool or other means to simulate water tension. The candidate may ask an examiner to assist with placement of the tool and affixing the leader to it. Candidates are expected to perform roll casts as if casting on water, regardless of the actual casting

surface.

Unless specifically permitted by a task, elliptical (Belgian/Gebetsroither) casts, Barnegat Bay casts (forward cast away from target, back cast to target), and Galway casts (forward cast away from, and off-side forward cast to target) are not allowed.

The loop size for all casts will be measured approximately 3 to 4 ft (0.9m – 1.2m) back from the front of the nose of the loop.

일반 정보:

오른손 주사용 캐스터의 경우, 캐스터-타깃 라인 상에서 캐스터의 뒤에서 바라볼 때, 로드 팁이 캐스터 머리의 관찰자 왼쪽에 위치하도록 캐스팅하는 것.

왼손 주사용 캐스터의 경우, 오른쪽과 왼쪽이 서로 바뀌는 것을 제외하고 유사한 오프사이드 정의가 적용된다.

오프사이드 캐스트를 수행하기 위해 허리를 굽히는 것은 허용된다.

오프사이드 캐스트는 비주사용 손을 사용하여 수행할 수 없다.

오프사이드 캐스트의 스탠스와 스타일은 캐스터의 재량에 따른다.

온사이드 캐스트는 오프사이드가 아닌 캐스트이다.

홀도 라인 샷(슈팅)도 과제에서 달리 명시하지 않는 한 허용되지 않다.

홀이 허용되지 않을 때는, 과제에서 달리 명시하지 않는 한 플라이 라인은 로드 핸드에만 쥐고 있어야 한다.

캐스트가 시험의 수행 기준을 충족한다는 전제 하에 다양한 캐스팅 스타일이 허용된다.

제2부에서는 심사위원이 학생 역할을 할 수 있다. 응시자는 제2부에서만 교보재를 사용할 수 있다.

응시자는 시험 중 어떠한 종류의 메모도 사용하거나 참조할 수 없다.

롤캐스트 과제는 물이 있으면 물 위에서 수행해야 한다. 롤캐스트 과제를 물 위에서 수행한다면, 응시자의 동의하에 시험 과제 순서를 변경하여 제1부를 과제 9~11로 마치고 제2부를 과제 18로 시작할 수 있다. 롤캐스트 과제를 물 위에서 수행하지 않는다면, 응시자는 롤캐스트 도구나 기타 수단을 선택하여 물의 장력을 모사할 수 있다. 응시자는 도구 배치와 리더를 도구에 부착하는 것을 돕도록 심사위원에게 요청할 수 있다. 응시자는 실제 캐스팅 표면과 관계없이 물 위에서 캐스팅하는 것처럼 롤캐스트를 수행할 것으로 기대된다.

과제에서 특별히 허용하지 않는 한, 타원형(벨기에식/게베츠로이터) 캐스트, 바그닛 베이 캐스트(타깃에서 멀어지는 포워드 캐스트, 타깃을 향한 백캐스트), 골웨이 캐스트(타깃에서 멀어지는 포워드 캐스트 및 오프사이드 포워드 캐스트로 타깃을 향함)는 허용되지 않다.

모든 캐스트의 루프 크기는 루프 코 전면에서 뒤로 약 3~4ft(0.9m~1.2m) 지점에서 측정된다.

General Performance Standards:

The candidate must demonstrate a high standard of performance that would create confidence in students and in other instructors. Candidates should successfully complete Casting Demonstration tasks in no more than three attempts. If a Casting Demonstration or Teaching task requires an explanation, the explanation must be clear and concise, and match the demonstration.

Except when a task specifies otherwise, the following requirements apply to all tasks.

Loops, including the initial back cast loop must:

Be no more than 4ft (1.22m) in width (“narrow loops”).

Be similar in size and shape between the forward and back casts.

Be approximately in-plane, making allowances for wind and gravity.

Be made so they can be easily assessed by the examiners.

The fly line and leader must unroll completely and be relatively straight.

The line, leader, and fly must not make contact with the ground or water (tick), except as the result of the final delivery.

Anchors and D Loops must be laid out relatively straight in alignment with the intended direction of the delivery cast and the target, observing the 180 degree principle for anchored casts.

Casts must be made at slow to medium line speed unless otherwise required by the task.

Several of the terms used in the exam, including those for loop shapes, can be found in the FFI Fly Casting Definitions. Candidates are expected to be familiar with the terms and their definitions appearing in this examination.

The diagrams at the end of this document are intended to clarify what is expected of candidates and to help examiners evaluate their performance.

After several false casts, the candidate will announce his or her intent to cast a tailing loop, which must be done on the next forward cast, and which will end the demonstration. Task 4. Starting with the fly at 40ft (12.2m), demonstrate a reach mend without slipping line. Then demonstrate a second reach mend with slipping line. The candidate will be asked to explain the uses of the two mends. The lead examiner will specify the direction of the first reach mend being either to the left side or to the right side. The candidate must perform the second reach mend in the direction opposite to that of the first.

Task 6. Casting 40ft (12.2m), demonstrate an aerial mend that produces a presentation with a series of waves in the line.

Waves must be similar in size and shape, aligned in the direction of the cast, and evenly distributed throughout the fly line.

Waves must be a minimum of approximately 2ft (0.6m) wide from point to point and must have at least 3 points.

The leader must be reasonably straight.

Task 12. Beginning with the fly in hand, present the fly to targets at 20, 30 and 45ft (6.1, 9.1, 13.7m) on-side.

The candidate must begin with the line extended to 55ft (16.7m) and then strip in the line until only 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) of fly line is beyond the rod tip. The line length must be adjusted during false casting between the targets. If the candidate misses the first target at 20ft (6.1m), the candidate must strip in the line until 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) of fly line is beyond the rod tip and begin again with the fly in hand. If the candidate misses the second (30ft (9.1m)) or third (45ft (13.7m)) target, the candidate must strip in the line to the previous target. The candidate is allowed three attempts per target. Examiners will allow for adverse conditions.

Part Two: Teaching

Teaching must be clear, concise, organized and directed to the student level specified within each task. Candidates can assume that a beginner student knows nothing about fly casting and that an intermediate student is familiar with common fly casting terms and basic fly casting mechanics. During the teaching section candidates are required to use each of the verbal, visual and kinesthetic teaching methods at least once. Candidates may use more than one teaching method on an individual teaching task if they consider it necessary. Candidates must use the 6-step method to diagnose and correct faults on Task 19 and may use an examiner as a student on tasks which do not require them to. General Instructions and General Performance Standards apply to demonstrations by the candidate during the teaching tasks. Line length during the teaching tasks is at the candidate’s discretion.

C) The candidate must demonstrate a narrow loop, a wide loop with a convex fly leg, and a tailing loop.

Casting (캐스팅, 抛投): 낚싯줄을 공중에서 띄워 목표 지점으로 보내는 일련의 동작.

Casting Instructor (CI) (캐스팅 강사, 飞钓抛投教练): FFI가 인증하는 플라이 캐스팅 강사.

Performance Exam (실기시험, 实操考试): 캐스팅 및 지도 실기를 평가하는 시험(본 문서의 대상).

해당 문서의 앞에 나오는 상세한 요구사항(예를 들어 "홀이 허용되지 않을 때는, 과제에서 달리 명시하지 않는 한 플라이 라인은 로드 핸드에만 쥐고 있어야 한다.")을 빠뜨리지 않도록 주의하고 22개 문항의 상세 요구사항들을 숙달하고 각 동작의 목적을 정확하게 이해하고 쉬운 언어로 설명할 쉬 있도록 연습해야 한다. 해당 내용들이 너무 형식적이고 이론적이라고 생각할 수 있는데 개인적인 경험에 비추어보면 전혀 그렇지 않다. 하나하나가 실제 응용되는 살아있는 지식들이다.

예를 들어 캐스팅에서 중요한 내용 중 하나인 '루프 평면 일치(Loop in Plane)'의 개념은 백캐스트 루프와 포워드캐스트 루프가 동일한 평면(Plane)에서 형성되고 이동해야 한다는 원칙이다(루프란 백캐스트, 포워드캐스트 때 플라이 라인이 만들어내는 U자형 고리이다). 이 원칙이 지켜졌을 때 4가지 정도의 장점을 예로 들 수 있다. 1. The line unrolls fully and straightens. 라인이 완전히 전개(Straighten)되기 위해. 플라이 라인은 한 평면에서 깔끔하게 펴진다. 그렇지 못할 경우 라인이 중간에 꺽이거나(꼬임, 윈드노트) 끝까지 펴지지 않는다. 평면이 일치할 때 루프가 위에서 아래로 깔끔히 말리듯 전개된다. 2. Energy transfers efficiently with no loss. 에너지 효율과 거리. 평면이 일치하면 로드가 만든 에너지가 라인을 따라 손실 없이 전달되어 좁은 루프가 만들어진다. 좁은 루프는 공기 저항이 적어 더 멀리 더 부드럽게 보낼 수 있다. 평면이 틀어지면 에너지가 분산돼 루프가 넓어지고 거리가 줄고 낙하가 거칠어진다. 3. Accuracy improves. 정확도(Accuracy). 루프가 가는 평면이 곧 라인이 날아가는 방향이다. 평면이 일정하게 유지되면 플라이가 가리킨 표적에 도달한다. 평면이 좌우로 흔들리면 라인도 표적에서 벗어난다. 4. Tailing loops and wind knots are avoided. 꼬임(Tailing Loop/ Wind Knot) 방지. 루프를 평면 안에서 깔끔히 유지하면 이런 꼬임이 줄어든다. 바람이나 장애물이 있을 경우 평면의 기울기를 조정할 수 있다. 하지만 이때도 백캐스트와 포워드캐스트의 루프 평면은 일치시켜야 상기의 장점들을 유지할 수 있다.
